Magnetic Structure of a Chiral Magnet DyNi3Al9

Abstract: We studied the magnetic structure of a chiral magnet DyNi 3 Al 9 , with T N = 8.5 K, by single crystal neutron diffraction. The RNi 3 Al 9 (R = rare-earth) system has recently been studied systematically from the viewpoint of chiral magnetism in the space group R32, allowing left and right handed crystal structures. We found that the magnetic order is described by the propagation vector q=(0, 0, 0), i.e., the unit cell of magnetic and crystal structures are identical. By combining the information from magnetiz… Show more

“…1 Recent investigations of intermetallic magnets LnNi 3 X (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er; X = Ga, Al) with a chiral crystal structure revealed that magnetic moments realize an almost anti-ferromagnetic arrangement with a small ferromagnetic component by canting of the moments. 2,3 In these systems, the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yoshida interaction (RKKY interaction) between 4f and conduction electrons plays a crucial role and has crystal field effects. In the inorganic compounds with the formula of TbMn x O y , known as ceramic magnets, 4,5 several different magnetic ordering due to the exchange interactions among Tb 3+ , Mn 3+ and/or Mn 4+ ions were observed.…”
