Magnetically Controllable Gastrointestinal Steering of Video Capsules

Abstract: Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) allows for comfortable video explorations of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, with special indication for the small bowel. In the other segments of the GI tract also accessible to probe gastroscopy and colonscopy, WCE still exhibits poorer diagnostic efficacy. Its main drawback is the impossibility of controlling the capsule movement, which is randomly driven by peristalsis and gravity. To solve this problem, magnetic maneuvering has recently become a thrust research area. Here… Show more

“…They demonstrated the use of the Niobe for steering and noninvasive 3D localization of a capsule in each of the main regions of the porcine GI tract (esophagus, stomach, small bowel, and colon). 97 The magnets allowed for precise orientation control (within 1°) of the capsule, but since no field gradients could be produced, translational motion was not achieved. A limited control on translation was, however, possible by moving the patient or the patient table.…”

“…On the one hand, efforts are emerging that attempt to turn capsules into controlled devices (17)(18)(19) capable of biopsy taking and therapeutic delivery, fitted with improved software for automatic, rapid lesion identification (20); an accurate, reliable locating system to precisely locate encountered lesions, and enhanced image quality. On the other hand, technological developments in the field of enteroscopy will allow advancing into the small bowel in an effective, fully operational manner in the upcoming future (21).…”

“…Permanent magnets were investigated and exploited by Carpi et al [8]. A robotic magnetic navigation system (Stereotaxis Inc., St. Louis, USA), developed for cardiovascular clinical procedures, was exploited for obtaining accurate robotic steering of a magnetically modified video capsule (PillCam, Given Imaging Inc., Israel).…”
