Magnetically Deformable Liquid Mirrors from Surface Films of Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract: This article describes the development of a magnetically deformable mirror composed of a reflective monolayer of silver nanoparticles deposited at the surface of a ferrofluid. In order to be commercially competitive, this mirror must surpass existing technologies with respect to optical performance. Several important characteristics of the mirror, including reflectivity, deformability and long term stability, are determined in large part by the constituent chemical components. This article describes recent pro… Show more

“…Significant characteristics of the mirror are its long-term durability and reflectivity, which are usually used in optical activities, wave-fronts, and solar cells 48 54 . It is an assembly of NPs that determines its reflectivity in the ultraviolet (UV)-visible regions of the electromagnetic spectrum 55 , 56 . Obviously, it is essential to prevent the risk of harmful bacteria in a public-health-safety.…”

“…The thickness of the magnetic fluid is 1mm and the radius is 40mm. Since the reflectivity of the magnetic fluid itself is very low and will greatly reduce the intensity of the reflected beam, it is covered with a liquid-like silver nano film prepared to improve the reflectivity [22] [23]. As shown in Fig.…”

“…The turn ratio of 64:49 is used for the top and bottom coils relative to the middle coil [16]. Also, magnetic fluids typically show low reflectance to light and can be coated with silver liquid-like thin films to improve the reflectance [17,18]. The self-assembly method has been usually used to…”
