Magnets Assisted Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Harvesting Water Wave Energy

Abstract: Developing renewable energies, especially ocean wave energy, is very significant for solving the energy and environmental crisis. The emergence of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) provides new possibilities for harvesting the abundant clean ocean wave energy on earth. In this work, the magnets assisted triboelectric nanogenerator (MA‐TENG) is designed to harvest low frequency ocean wave energy. The integration of electromagnetic generators (EMGs) and TENGs in the MA‐TENG can accomplish their complementary … Show more

“…With the rapid development of economy and technology, the sustainable development of human society has an increasing energy demand. A large amount of renewable clean energy is stored in natural water in the form of droplets, [1][2][3][4] waves, [5][6][7][8][9][10] flows, [11][12][13][14] and others. [15][16][17][18] Considering that most of these energy sources have the characteristics of low frequency, wide distribution and irregularity, it is not easy to use traditional electromagnetic power generation equipment to collect and utilize them.…”

“…There are various forms of energy sources available like kinetic, biochemical, thermal, and solar energy [6]. Among these energy sources, the kinetic energy is abundantly available, which can be produced by external environments such as wind [7,8], rain [9], and water wave [10]; by human body movements such as walking [11], running [12], jumping [13], and joint motion [14]; by physiological motion such as heartbeat [15,16], respiration [17], arterial pulse [18][19][20], and gastrointestinal motility [21]. There are three main transduction mechanisms focused by most studies for kinetic energy harvesting, including electromagnetism, piezoelectricity, and triboelectricity [22].…”

“…Triboelectric Nanogenerator (TENG) is an emerging energy harvesting technology, which is an effective approach to address such issues. As shown in Figure 1a, TENGs can collect lowgrade energies from the environment, such as oceanic energy, [4][5][6][7] mechanical energy, [8,9] raindrop energy, [10][11][12] wind energy, [13][14][15] and human motion energy, [16][17][18] and convert them into electrical energy for electronic devices. However, TENG exhibits these characteristics of pulse output, ultra-high voltage (kV), ultra-high impedance (MΩ), and low current output (μA), which makes it challenging to effectively transmit the generated energy to the load end for efficient utilization.…”
