Magnets for the Heavy-Ion Cancer Therapy Accelerator Facility (HICAT) for the Clinic in Heidelberg

Abstract: The Heavy Ion Cancer Therapy Accelerator facility (HICAT) for the university hospital in Heidelberg is now under construction and will be completed in 2006. The facility consists of 2 ion sources, low-energy beam transfer lines, a linear accelerator, a medium energy beam transfer line, a synchrotron, high-energy beam transfer lines, and 3 treatment locations. One of the treatment locations will be equipped with a gantry. All magnets were designed at GSI. The design of the magnets will be reviewed. Wherever pos… Show more

“…Traditional electromagnets are difficult to keep small. The Heidelberg ion therapy (HIT) accelerator pushed standard magnet fabrication techniques to new limits to produce electromagnets with a small enough outer diameter to fulfill the power requirements [3]. This type of magnet design has also been used in other DTLs [4].…”

“…The radiation dose delivered to the target volume is maximized and the dose to the surrounding normal tissues is minimized [1][2][3]. Many facilities use rotatable gantry beamlines to direct the proton or ion beam to the patient from different angles [4].…”
