Abstract: Capsule: Myctophids are a key group in the Southern Ocean food web, and have shown a possible decreasing trend in mercury contamination over the decade.

“…Moreover, at Gough Island, Atlantic petrels (Pterodroma incerta), soft-plumaged petrels (Pterodroma mollis) and sooty albatrosses (Phoebetria fusca) all had higher feather THg concentrations in 2009/2010 compared with the mid-1980s [13]. Similar trends are not observed in lower trophic level organisms (cephalopod and myctophid species) at South Georgia [54,55]; however, these samples were collected far to the south of the subantarctic and subtropical waters used by the majority of grey-headed albatrosses.…”

“…This is not surprising since the zooplankton species examined range from predominantly herbivorous Antarctic krill (Quetin and Ross, 1991) to predators such as Themisto gaudichaudii (Havermans et al, 2019). Squid and myctophid fish link zooplankton to the top predators (seabirds) and, in terms of Hg dynamics, exhibit some degree of variation between individuals and species in Hg concentrations [for more details see (Seco et al, 2020a;2020b)]. Generally, the highest Hg concentrations were found in predators higher in the food web (notothenioid fish and seabirds).…”

“…In the blood stream, Hg and Cd are bound to complex protein forms and are then transported first to the liver. In the liver, heavy metals are divided into two parts, some of which will accumulate in the liver, while others will be transferred to bile and converted into inorganic Hg and Cd compounds and then re-detoxified (Evans et al, 1993;Seco et al, 2020). The compound will then be delivered through the blood to the kidney, some of which will accumulate in the kidney, and somewill be removed with urine (Ghedira et al, 2010;Squadrone et al, 2013).…”
