Main seagrass beds and threats to their habitats in the coastal sea of South China

Abstract: The distribution, species, biomass, productivity of main seagrasses and their suffered main threats are introduced and discussed in this paper based on the field surveys in the offshore areas of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan provinces. The seagrass beds distributed mainly in Liusha Bay, Donghai Island and Hailing Island of Guangdong Province; Hepu and Pearl Bay of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; Li'an Bay, Xincun Bay, Longwan Bay and Sanya Bay of Hainan Province and so on. The total area of seagrass beds in … Show more

“…Eutrophication by release of nutrients from wastewater, agriculture, and aquaculture has fostered macroalgae blooms in this area (Liu et al, 2013). In recent years, seagrasses have rapidly declined in China (Han et al, 2007;Huang et al, 2006). In some areas of the north coast of China, seagrass meadows have disappeared and been replaced by macroalgae mats (personal observations from Qiuying Han).…”

“…But seagrass in Hainan Island near fish farming increased the TOC as nutrient enrichment could enhance plant-derived contributions to the TOC [43]. The TOC content of the estuaries on Hainan Island was consistent with the values for the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers [44] and the Gironde, Loire, and Seine estuaries [45] -which are all located in temperate zones. Strong seasonality influenced the TOC in the estuaries [46].…”

“…The lack of trawling at Pilar may be related to the difference in the number of boats between the two sites as Pilar has a greater number of boats, which could make trawling difficult. According to Huang et al (2006), trawling pulls out seagrass by the roots, thereby destroying the meadows. Some fishing techniques may disturb the sediment dynamics, which can result in a severe reduction in meadows (Hemminga and Duarte 2000, Short and WyllieEcheverria 1996) as observed at Itamaracá Island.…”

“…The act of digging up shellfish causes seagrass to be pulled out by the roots, thereby destroying the meadows. This activity also covers the meadows with sediment, which affects seagrass growth (Huang et al 2006).…”
