Maintenance of Smart Buildings using Fault Trees

Abstract: Timely maintenance is an important means of increasing system dependability and life span. Fault Maintenance trees (FMTs) are an innovative framework incorporating both maintenance strategies and degradation models and serve as a good planning platform for balancing total costs (operational and maintenance) with dependability of a system. In this work, we apply the FMT formalism to a Smart Building application and propose a framework that e ciently encodes the FMT into Continuous Time Markov Chains. This allow… Show more

“…This study recognises that MM is capable of ensuring that smart buildings yield longer asset life with fewer breakdowns and a higher quality of occupant life. In support of the aforementioned statement, Cauchi et al (2018) affirmed that maintenance management is a crucial activity for retaining the smartness of a smart building. The failure of effective maintenance management practices leads to a loss in the benefits of achieving greater comfort and decreased building lifespan (Enshassi et al 2019).…”

“…This suggests that the major characteristics of smart buildings are the integration of complex technologies into their design and construction. Cauchi et al (2018) asserted that the rise of complex technologies like the internet of things enabled the development of a modern building that is termed smart buildings. This opinion indicates that smart buildings were made possible through the activities of the internet of things which is one of the components of the fourth industrial revolution.…”

“…The third is the analysis of the performance characteristics and benefits of smart building, including smart building capability and performance indicators [16,17], economic and energy consumption analysis [18], economic feasibility analysis of smart building technology [19], and system [20], data and monitoring analysis [21,22]. In addition, there are a few papers dealing with other areas of research in smart building, including smart building construction, acceptance and maintenance [23,24], application of emerging technologies in industrial construction [25][26][27][28][29][30], identification of group activity characteristics in smart buildings [31,32], as well as problems and challenges faced by integrating smart buildings into smart cities [33][34][35][36].…”

“…Novel logic languages intended for formal specification and verification have been introduced to abstract, express and check desirable properties, e.g., trust, in distributed systems [ 40 ], or to specify typical embedded and Cyber-Physical System functionalities like sensing, actuation, and communication [ 41 ]. In the latter case, statistical, instead of exhaustive, model checking techniques are adopted to avoid state space explosion [ 42 ].…”
