Major cardiovascular events in patients presenting with acute stroke: a 5-year follow-up study in patients who had ischaemic stroke and stroke mimics

Abstract: ObjectivesThe long-term acute stroke outcome has not been well studied in the Middle-Eastern population. The primary objective of our study is to compare the long-term outcome of acute ischaemic stroke (IS) with/without previous cerebrovascular/cardiovascular disease (CVD) to stroke mimics (SM) with CVD.Settings and participantsThe Qatar stroke database was reviewed for IS and SM admissions in Qatari Nationals between 2013 and 2019.OutcomesPatients were prospectively assessed for development of recurrent strok… Show more

“…Most of these studies have used clinical factors or the results obtained through the image, such as haemorrhagic transformation occurrence, not the brain MRI itself. Some studies have used survival analysis to report on the clinical predictors of MACE in AIS patients 14–16. Some other studies have classified functional outcomes using directly extracted image features from CNNs 32 33.…”

“…As a widely used method of survival analysis using clinical information, the Cox proportional hazards model (CoxPH) is a linear regression model used to evaluate the effect of variables on survival, and random survival forest (RSF) uses an ensemble prediction of multiple decision trees 12 13. Studies have been conducted previously to analyse clinical factors predicting MACEs after AIS using CoxPH 14–16. However, assessing the long-term risk of major vascular events after AIS using traditional survival analysis has limitations when using personalised brain images directly at the individual level.…”

“…SOR is probably associated with poor functional recovery, a higher incidence of severe events either in hospital or short-term death and long term major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) complications [5] . Therefore, we want a reliable risk stratification tool that reliably predicts the development of SOR on the basis of its complicated pathophysiology.…”

“…We excluded patients in whom the final diagnosis was either ICH or stroke mimics. The details of the stroke database have previously been published (22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27). In brief, HGH is a Joint Commission International accredited 600-bed hospital, where ~95% of all strokes in Qatar requiring hospitalization are admitted.…”
