Purpose In this paper, multi-period location–inventory–routing problem (LIRP) considering different vehicles with various capacities has been investigated for the supply chain of red meat. The purpose of this paper is to reduce variable and fixed costs of transportation and production, holding costs of red meat, costs of meeting livestock needs and refrigerator rents. Design/methodology/approach The considered supply chain network includes five echelons. Demand considered for each customer is approximated as deterministic using historical data. The modeling is performed on a real case. The presented model is a linear mixed-integer programming model. The considered model is solved using general algebraic modeling system (GAMS) software for data set of the real case. Findings A real-world case is solved using the proposed method. The obtained results have shown a reduction of 4.20 per cent in final price of red meat. Also, it was observed that if the time periods changed from month to week, the final cost of meat per kilogram would increase by 43.26 per cent. Originality/value This paper presents a five-echelon LIRP for the meat supply chain in which vehicles are considered heterogeneous. To evaluate the capability of the presented model, a real case is solved in Iran and its results are compared with the real conditions of a firm, and the rate of improvement is presented. Finally, the impact of the changed time period on the results of the solution is examined.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to envision the alternative futures of the design and manufacturing industry using an integrated foresight method based on scenario planning. Also, the authors aim at developing robust strategies for an enterprise that aims to be placed as a leading high-tech international design and manufacturing company in 2035. Design/methodology/approach The proposed approach is created by integrating several foresight methods such as Delphi, scenario planning, MICMAC and cross-impact analysis. Findings Automation and sustainable development are found as the fundamental driving forces in the design and manufacturing industry. Four scenarios based on these driving forces and expert knowledge are created: innovation adaptation, forced automation (business-as-usual), sustainable era and automationless scenarios. For the developed scenarios, a set of strategies are proposed by asking experts about the strategies which can be taken to make the enterprise competitive in all developed scenarios in 2035. The main macro-level outcome is that economic and technological drivers will be the most important factors for design and manufacturing, followed by environmental and social factors. Originality/value The proposed method uses the strengths of traditional scenario planning but overcomes its weaknesses by suggesting a systematic process for scenario building and easy application.

The performance of an energy generation system depends on three sectors of generation, transmission, and distribution. Especially when the power generation system has a decentralized structure in which different companies have different types of power plants, transmission, and distribution architectures. In this study, a network data envelopment analysis (NDEA) model is extended to assess the energy generation system's performance considering all three sectors of the regional electricity companies. There is a gap in the published DEA literature on energy network efficiency in studying the function of individual processes of these subsystems. After identifying the companies' structure, inputs, and outputs for all sectors, the extended NDEA model is implemented to estimate the efficiency of the whole energy generation network including production, transfer, and circulation sectors of the firms. The proposed model's network-based features allow computing the efficiency of individual subsystems and the whole system simultaneously. Iran’s energy generation system, including all three sectors during 2015–2019, is used to verify the model. The results indicate that while the annual average efficiency score of electricity companies has been increasing by 2018, it was decreased during 2018–2019. The model can be easily applied to energy generation systems in other countries.
