Making history

Abstract: ABSTRACT'Lifelogging' technology makes it possible to amass digital data about every aspect of our everyday lives. Instead of focusing on such technical possibilities, here we investigate the way people compose long-term mnemonic representations of their lives. We asked 10 families to create a time capsule, a collection of objects used to trigger remembering in the distant future. Our results show that contrary to the lifelogging view, people are less interested in exhaustively digitally recording their past t… Show more

“…Curatorial services could serve to address the agency in data-driven systems to support a human voice, and the negotiation, downplaying or defense of data that we saw participants engage in during their dates. Literature on digital possessions and legacy frequently highlights the value and need for curation [32,53,65] towards preservation of, and meaning-making with, digital content. Clearly while some data may well be cherishable, much is ephemeral.…”

“…As episodic memories cues accumulate over time, a framework is required to organize and represent captured cues. Recording captured memory cues and constructing them in a narrative representation is a method that works well with users' preferences and natural habits [44]. Such work includes narrative diaries of everyday events, modalities of cues include video summaries or animations [30], bio-sensing data [55], or combined multimedia memory cues [42].…”

“…Despite above potential of lifelogging technologies, they have been criticised because of a lack of capacity for users to engage with the volumes of data they collect. Petrelli and Whittaker argued that digital family memorabilia such as photos, videos and emails were rarely accessed [33,34]. Choe et al studied barriers to use lifelogging technologies and highlighed several common pitfalls including tracking too many things without triggers and context [3].…”
