Making sense of chaos: uncovering the mechanisms of conformational entropy
Stephanie Wankowicz,

Abstract:By converting a disordered polymer into a globular structure, protein folding reduces many conformational degrees of freedom, resulting in a significant conformational entropy penalty. Nonetheless, residual entropy persists in the protein's native state as it fluctuates between thermally accessible conformations. Here, we review biophysical evidence, primarily from NMR studies, for how conformational entropy modulates the free energy of ligand binding and catalysis. The major theme that emerges is that selecti… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
