Making sense of teacher agency for change with social and epistemic network analysis

Abstract: Reference to teachers as agents of change has become commonplace in the education literature, including change toward more inclusive practice in response to the changing demographic of schooling. Yet, little is known about how teacher agency relates to (1) their understanding of, and commitment to any given change agenda and (2) the institutional and social structures through which they are able to access knowledge and resources within and beyond their schools. This study combined social and epistemic network … Show more

“…For instance, [23] explored the value of combining SNA and ENA in what they referred to as a social epistemic network signature (SENS) to predict students' performance. Similar combinations with SNA have also been explored to examine teachers' agency [94] and participation in knowledge building [80], [83].…”

“…Coding of data extracted from online log data was used in eight articles (10.5%) in the form of game-logged data [45], [89]- [92], students' actions in LMS log files [24], [93] and teacher's online logs [94].…”

“…Three studies involved qualitative case studies and three used a range of other forms of qualitative data collection/analysis, e.g. Pantić et al (2021), who analysed teacher-completed online logs. Two studies were interview-based, and a single study used mixed methods-interviews, observations and questionnaire (Dukpa et al, 2021).…”

“…In epistemic networks, a thicker line indicates a stronger connection between two nodes, while a thinner line indicates a weaker connection between two nodes (Shaffer et al, 2016 ). This technique projects the connections of these codes in a high-dimensional space (Pantić et al, 2022 ). Two types of networks were created, a network showing how two NOS categories were simultaneously addressed in empirical studies (Caramaschi et al, 2022 ; Cheung, 2020 ; Gandolfi, 2021 ).…”
