Malaria transmission in two localities in north-western Argentina

Abstract: Background: Malaria is one of the most important tropical diseases that affects people globally. The influence of environmental conditions in the patterns of temporal distribution of malaria vectors and the disease has been studied in different countries. In the present study, ecological aspects of the malaria vector Anopheles (Anopheles) pseudopunctipennis and their relationship with climatic variables, as well as the seasonality of malaria cases, were studied in two localities, El Oculto and Aguas Blancas, i… Show more

“…triannulatus Neiva and Pinto (González and Carrejo 2009)—were not detected. The reduced diversity of Anopheles species in these 2 sites compared with previous reports may have resulted from 1) differences in the sites and seasonality sampled, 2) discontinuous collections and number of collections, and 3) local changes in ecological conditions and human activities (Conn et al 2002, Yasuoka and Levins 2007, Dantur et al 2009). …”

“…pseudopunctipennis had been recorded at more than 90 locations up to the 1960s (Castro et al 1959(Castro et al , 1960. In recent years, this species has been recorded only at San Ramón de la Nueva Orán, El Oculto, and Aguas Blancas (Dantur Juri et al 2009). Anopheles pseudopunctipennis is the most common and abundant species of Anophelini in the Yungas area.…”

“…In Argentina, the once wide geographical distribution of malaria now appears to be reduced to the northwest and northeast of the country, where malaria is still a major endemic parasitic disease (Ministerio de Salud de la Nación 1997; Curto et al 2003;Dantur Juri et al 2009). In the northwest of the country, changes in land use during the last century have led to a different driver of malarial transmission, now indirectly linked to gradual changes in the Yungas ecoregion, which area has provided new habitat for larvae sites for the vector Anoph eles (Anopheles) pseudopunctipennis Theobald, 1901.…”
