Male Facial Masculinity as a Cue to Health Outcomes

Abstract: Evolutionary theories of human attraction draw heavily upon nonhuman literature, and currently the Immunocompetence Handicap Hypothesis dominates research into female attraction to male facial masculinity. Although some studies have shown links between masculinity and some measures of health, other data have failed to support the Immunocompetence Hypothesis as applied to human face preferences. Here we summarize that literature and present new data regarding links between masculinity and multiple measures of h… Show more

“…As a matter of fact, they are often used as synonymous concepts. This puzzling result has been observed before [15], [50]. Several reasons may explain why these measures are at odds, but it is quite plausible that subjective judgments of masculinity are influenced by other factors apart from just the morphology of the face.…”

“…Facial BMI scores correlated with actual BMI (r 118 ¼ 0.59, p , 0.001), but not height (r 117 ¼ 0.05, p ¼ 0.565) [57]. 1 Eyelid openness. The degree of eyelid openness was examined by taking the vertical distance from the centre of the pupil to the top eyelid and dividing it by the width of the eye inner canthus to outer canthus.…”

“…Understanding how these judgements are informed is important because they feed into other social judgements such as attractiveness [1][2][3] or leadership ability [4], which is potentially consequential in terms of real-life outcomes, such as dating and or employment outcomes. Other social consequences may stem directly from judgements of health because maintaining a physical distance from those who are perceived to be unhealthy has clear evolutionary benefits through avoidance of contagious disease.…”

“…In this study, we investigated the ICHH in humans by testing for an association between immunocompetence, as measured by heterozygosity at the major histocompatibility (MHC) locus, and an objective measure of facial masculinity, a secondary sexual trait that is thought to have evolved to signal health and immune-function in humans (11,(46)(47)(48)(49)(50) . Based on what we know about the condition-dependence of sexual ornaments (18)(19)(20)(21)(22) , we tested three hypotheses: Hypothesis 1: Facial masculinity is a condition-dependent male ornament in humans.…”
