Male hypogonadism and metabolic syndrome

Abstract: The role of androgens in cardiovascular disease is still controversial in men. In this study, we investigated metabolic disorders in Tunisian hypogonadal men compared with healthy controls. Forty hypogonadal men and 80 control subjects were enrolled. Patients with a history of pre-existing panhypopituitarism, thyroid dysfunction or inflammatory disease were excluded. Glycaemia, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), lipid profile, insulin, testosterone and gonadotrophins were … Show more

“…As shown in Table 1, a considerable body of literature exists demonstrating a bidirectional link between TD and Met S [23441424344454647484950515253545556575859606162]. Several systematic reviews, crosssectional studies, and clinical trials have reported low levels of total T (TT) and sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in men with Met S, irrespective of age [11446364].…”

“…ADT for the treatment of PCa also induces dyslipidaemia (181, 182, 183), while T replacement therapy in hypogonadal men exhibits beneficial effects on the lipid profile (127, 184, 185). An inverse correlation exists between serum T and high-sensitive C-reactive protein in normal ageing (186) and hypogonadal (187) men, and T replacement has been shown to shift the cytokine balance towards a state of reduced inflammation (184, 188). …”

“…Many changes are described with important sexual symptoms, similar to the presence of overt hypogonadism, with important diseases linked to this testosterone deficiency: bone demineralization [16], increased cardiovascular risk [17], frailty [18], weight gain [19], dyslipidemia [20] and increased general mortality [21][22][23].…”
