Male Meiotic Studies in Some Plants of Polypetalae from Dalhousie Hills (Himachal Pradesh)

Abstract: Summary Male meiosis and pollen fertility studies have been performed in 35 species belonging to 25 genera and 13 families of Polypetalae from the Dalhousie hills. Impatiens laxiflora (nϭ6) was counted chromosomally for the first time. Corydalis cornuta (nϭ8), Erysimum hieracifolum (nϭ16), Arenaria serpyllifolia (nϭ10), Drymaria diandra (nϭ13), Geranium lucidum (nϭ14), Nasturtium officinale (nϭ16), Geum roylei (nϭ21) and Chaerophyllum reflexum (nϭ11) are worked out chromosomally for the first time in India. “…Earlier, 2n = 26 was reported for this species . Earlier, 2n = 24 was reported for this species (Kaur & Singhal, 2010). Previous records for this species comprise 2n = 18 (Krasnikov & Schaulo, 1990), 2n = 28 (Pal, 1952), 2n = 36-42 (Heitz, 1926, 2n = 40 (Morton 1993;Albers & Pröbsting, 1998;Javůrková-Jarolímová, 1992), 2n = 42 (Probatova & al., 1996), 2n = 44 (Sidhu & Bir, 1983), and 2n = 40-44 (Tischler, 1937).…”

“…Standard Cytological Indices). The presence of B-chromosomes in the tetraploid cytotype (2n=28) has been reported in the plants collected from Dalhousie hills (Kaur et al 2010). It is thus apparent that the species exhibits a considerable amount of chromosomal diversity and dynamism involving intraspecific polyploidy (based on two basic numbers, x=7 and x=8), abnormal meiotic behavior, and the presence of B-chromosomes.…”

“…19) at various stages of meiosis and adds a new tetraploid cytotype for the species on a world-wide basis. Earlier the species was reported as having triploid 2n=21 from Belarus (Dmitrieva 2000) along with hexaploids quite common as 2n=42 from India (Kaur et al 2010) and outside India from Belarus (Dmitrieva 2000) and Bulgaria (Baltisberger 2006).…”

“…8) which adds a new diploid cytotype for the species on a global level. The species is already known to be polybasic having diploids and polyploids, namely 2n=20 from Morocco (Galland 1988); 2n=28 from India (Kaur et al 2010); 2n=40, common number from Bulgaria (Petrova and Stanimirova 2003); 2n=42 from Morocco (Galland 1988); 2n=46 (Strid and Anderson 1985) and 2n=60 (Aryavand 1983) from outside of India.…”
