Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the head and neck

Abstract: Review of the literature reveals of 29 cases of fibrous histiocytoma of the deep structures of the head and neck. Three additional cases are reported: a multicentric case involving the submandibular gland with metastases to the lungs; and intraosseous tumor of the mandible locally invasive; and a submental tumor which rapidly recurred after simple excision. A metastatic potential of 22% is established. The historm, nomenclature, histopathology and clinical features are reviewed. The value of electron microscop… Show more

“…6 of these were in the paranasal sinuses, but to our knowledge, no report of a malignant fibrous histiocytoma originating in the nasal septum exists. The initial symptoms of the patients [1] were the formation of a mass and pain, as in the present case. A review of 200 cases by Weiss and Enzinger [2] revealed only 6 (3%) occurring in the head and neck region.…”

“…From tissue cultures of the tumor, it is suggested that it is either histiocytic inorigin with transformation to facultative fibroblasts [3] or it is formed by primitive mesenchymal cells with transformation to both histiocytes and fibroblasts [4], The histological features of malignant fibrous histiocytomas may dis play a nonaggressive pattern without metastatic potential. The review of Blitzer et al [ 1 ], however, showed a metastatic rate of 22 %, while Weiss and Enzinger [2] have reported a high 42% rate. The rate of local recurrence has been reported as 44% [2].…”
