Malignant histiocytosis and other causes of death in Bernese mountain dogs in Denmark

Abstract: To determine the causes of death in Bernese mountain dogs, to assess the prevalence of malignant histiocytosis in the Danish Bernese mountain dog population, and to assess whether a hereditary pattern for this disease exists, 756 questionnaires were sent to members of the Danish Bernese Mountain Dog Club requesting information regarding the life span and causes of death of their dogs. A response rate of 57.7 per cent was achieved, giving information for 812 dogs, of which 290 had died. The average life span wa… Show more

“…Certain breeds are at greater risk for the development of HS, including the Bernese mountain dog, Golden retriever, Labrador retriever, Flat coated retriever and Rottweiler. [13][14][15][16][17] Despite its frequent occurrence in other organ systems, CNS HS has been rarely reported in Bernese mountain dogs and Rottweilers. 3,12,18 Conversely, although not considered an at-risk breed for HS in other body regions, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi comprised 7/15 (47%) cases of CNS HS in a previous report.…”

“…A recent study of Danish Bernese mountain dogs described 13 dogs diagnosed with malignant histiocytosis, of which 11 were genealogically related [76]. In 1995 Padgett analysed the inheritance of “histiocytosis” in 127 affected Bernese mountain dogs and suggested a polygenic mode of inheritance and a calculated heritability of 0.298 [57].…”

“…Indeed, the BMD was the most short-lived breed in 1 study, with a mean life expectancy of 6.8 years [ 5 ]. More recent studies reported mean and median life expectancies of 7.1 and 7.0–8.0 years, respectively, compared with a calculated mean and median expectancy for all breeds of 10 and 11 years, respectively [ 1 , 4 , 6 , 7 ]. Although larger breeds have been shown to have a lower average age at death than smaller breeds [ 1 , 6 , 8 10 ], the life expectancy of BMDs remains low when compared with breeds of similar size, such as flat coated retrievers (mean, 9.5 years) or German shepherd dogs (mean, 10.3 years) [ 1 , 6 ].…”
