Malignant melanoma maxilla

Abstract: A malignant melanoma is a highly lethal melanocytic neoplasm. A neoplasm usually affects the skin. Malignant melanomas in the head and neck region are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all melanomas. Malignant melanoma of the nose and paranasal sinuses is an aggressive disease typically presenting at an advanced stage, with a 5-year survival rate ranging 20-30%. Melanomas are tumors arising from melanocytes, which are neuroectodermally derived cells located in the basal layers of the skin. This is a case re… Show more

“…Percentage of different histological grades among SCC are well differentiated SCC 83.3% (10 out of 12 cases of SCC), moderately differentiated SCC and poorly differentiated SCC 8.3% each (1 each out of 12 cases of SCC).These findings are consistent with the result reported in litratures. 1,[8][9][10][11] However, a study realized by olufunso simisola aduayi et al is contrary to our results which shouts SCC constitute over 80% of all malignancies that arise in the nasomaxillary area. 7 CT scan is the most frequently used radiological investigation to evaluate nasomaxillary swelling lesions.…”

“…Although sensitive, S100 is not specific. More specific markers include HMB45, Melan-A or anti-tyrosinase, which stain about 75% of lesions [1][2][3][4][5]. The morphological and immunohistochemical picture was on the same lines in our case also.…”

“…Because most melanomas are asymptomatic in their early stages, the diagnosis is unfortunately often delayed until symptoms. Neck nodal metastases to cervical lymph nodes, occurs in 10-50% cases [5][6][7][8]. In the case being discussed here, the patient was a 57-year-old male who complained of nasal bleeding and nasal obstruction since 6-7 months.…”

“…Regional lymphnode metastasis and distant metastasis to the bone, lungs and liver have also been reported in advanced cases. 2 Physiologic pigmentation, melanotic macule, smoker's melanosis, drug-induced melanosis, melanocytic naevus and pigmentation due to systemic causes like Addison's disease, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, etc may be considered in the differential diagnosis. 3 Histologically atypical melanocytes, with hyperchromatism and nuclear pleomorphism in the junction of the epithelium and connective tissue together with immunohistochemical markers positive for S-100, HMB-45 are considered confirmatory for the diagnosis of MM.…”
