Malignant Mixed Müllerian Tumour of the Uterus: Analysis of 44 Cases

Abstract: Objectives: The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinicopathological features and prognostic factors of uterine carcinosarcoma. Patients and Methods: In this retrospective study, the clinical characteristics of 44 patients with uterine MMMT were evaluated. Survival curves were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared by the log-rank test. Results: Forty-four patients with uterine carcinosarcoma were referred to our unit between 1995 and 2015. Their median age was 66.5 years. All women underwent to… Show more

“…The average age was 58.6 ± 11.0 years (median, 59 years), which was in accordance with recent Chinese and Korean reports [3,12] but was different from that of several international reports [13,14] (average age was 65 years); this discrepancy may have been influenced by the race of the patients. The symptoms of UCS are postmenopausal vaginal bleeding and menstrual disorders, vaginal discharge caused by necrosis or infection of the lesions, and the presence of an abdominal mass.…”

“…Our patients presented with large solid tumors usually lling the entire uterine cavity, with a mean size of 8.02 cm (range of 5-17 cm). This re ects the late diagnosis in our context because of poor medical conditions, although some studies showed that tumor size had no consistent prognostic value [12,13].…”

“…Only 3 cases showed obvious sarcomatous differentiation (2 cases of rhabdomyosarcoma and 1 case of chondrosarcoma). In the literature, there were contradicting reports regarding the prognostic value of the sarcomatous differentiation in UCS (heterologous or homologous) [8, 12,13]. The FIGO stage remains the most robust prognostic survival factors in patients with UCS, and advanced stages (FIGO stages III and IV) usually associated with a higher risk of death [4,13].…”

“…Moreover, he admits hysteroscopy as being a very successful procedure in the detection of endometrial lesions [ 7 , 16 ]. Evaluation of the endometrium by hysteroscopy D and C raises the accuracy in diagnosis of endometrial cancer [ 7 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ].…”
