Malignant oncocytoma of the parotid gland: a case report with an immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study

Abstract: A rare case of a 71 -year-old man with malignant oncocytoma is presented. The tumour was found in the left parotid region with enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. The resected parotid mass consisted of three discrete nodules, each histologically characterized by a uniform proliferation of oncocytic tumour cells. The patient underwent repeated operations for recurrences and metastases, and eventually died of acute pneumonia 18 months after the first admission. Metastases to the lymph nodes, ribs, spine and liver … Show more

“…4,[7][8][9]23 Malignant forms of oncocytomas or oncocytic carcinomas, characterized by cytomorphologically malignant oncocytes or evidence of metastasis, are occasionally reported and account for Ͻ1% of all salivary gland tumors. 1,3,6,14,24,25 These are usually associated with a preexisting oncocytoma but may arise de novo. 3 No histologic features of malignancy were detected in our series, and none of the 7 patients who underwent surgery showed clinical features of disease recurrence following surgery.…”

“…Sugimoto et al [12] reported that oncocytomas commonly presented as a parotid mass with pain as well as with facial nerve paralysis, and that such symptoms were involved with 1/3 of the patients. However, our patient's main symptom was a slowly progressive painless mass and the facial paralysis, which occurred as a complication of surgery.…”

“…Lungs, liver and brain metastasis have been reported. The long-term survival is poor because of distant disease, and long-term follow-up is necessary after therapy [12].…”
