Malignant Skin Tumors Among Dermatology Patients in University Hospitals of Japan

Abstract: A total of 829 patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), 942 patients with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and 256 patients with malignant melanoma (MM) was encountered among 1,033,678 new dermatology patients in 44 of 46 university hospitals of Japan between 1971 and 1975. The incidences of skin cancers (SCC and BCC) and of MM among new dermatology patients were 0.171% and 0.025% respectively. The incidences had increased 2 to 2.5 times over those of the previous survey between 1956 and 1960.Skin cancers were m… Show more

“…6,71 The incidences of BCC per 100,000 population have been reported in different races as follows: black men (1), black women (2) 2,7,17,19,34,51,74,75 The incidence of BCC in Caucasians in Kauai, Hawaii, is reported to be the highest in the United States. 34 The ratio of BCC to SCC in Japan in the 1960s was 1e1.4:1, 76 whereas in the 1990s the ratio increased to 4.5:1, 54 suggesting an increasing trend of BCC in Japan. The incidence of BCC among Asian residents of Singapore increased at a rate of 2% to 8% annually from 1968 to 1997.…”

“…The fact that "the nearer people live to the equator, the higher the frequencies of skin cancers" is true even among people of the same race (85). Skin cancers can be induced by irradiating mice with UV-B (14,62).…”

“…The incidence of skin cancer in the Japanese population is estimated to be much lower than that in western populations. 9,10 Skin cancer has a relatively large proportion of LM after HSCT 3-5 and actually skin cancers were included in the above two reports (5 out of 12 in Burroughs et al 8 and at least 2 out of 11 in Ades et al 6 ). In contrast, no skin cancer was observed in our series.…”
