Malignant transformation from mature cystic teratoma of the ovary

Abstract: We present a case of malignant change of an ovarian mature cystic teratoma. Our patient was a 48-year-old woman and she visited a primary care doctor presenting with abdominal pain. At her first visit, her pelvic tumor measured 70 × 50 mm by ultrasonography. She was diagnosed as rupture of the malignant tumor occurred secondary to mature cystic teratoma and she took the surgery (abdominal total hysterectomy, bilateral oophorectomy and partial omentectomy). Pathologic diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)… Show more

“…According to a recently published systematic review, it seems that early hysterectomy and platinum-based chemotherapy could be associated with better survival; however, this result should be interpreted with caution [10]. The most common chemotherapy regimen used in these patients is the same used for ovarian epithelial cancers, but despite multidisciplinary management, there are still a high recurrence and mortality rate [11,12]. Patni et al, similarly to our study, has used the combination of carboplatin and paclitaxel regimen [13].…”

“…Some reports also con rmed that tumors are not sensitive to chemotherapy [15]. Although some patients have received chemotherapy and multidisciplinary management, the recurrence rate and mortality rate are still high [19].However, according to a recently published systematic review, early hysterectomy and platinum chemotherapy appear to be associated with better survival [20].Our patient underwent laparoscopic partial colectomy, hysterectomy, and bilateral appendage resection. The patient did not receive chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and at 6 months post-treatment, no evidence of recurrence or metastasis was found.…”

“…The most common malignant transformation is squamous cell carcinoma with an incidence of around 0.2%–0.8%. 6 We here discuss a case of the 80‐year‐old woman where mature cystic teratoma has been transformed into undifferentiated carcinoma.…”
