“…Mallet thumb, avulsion of the extensor pollicis longus tendon from its distal phalangeal insertion, is less common than mallet finger. 3,14 There are few reports about mallet thumbs, particularly those with associated fracture. 3,9,14 Little is known about the difference between mallet fractures of the thumb compared with mallet fractures of the index through small fingers with respect to etiology, radiographic findings, and treatment.…”

“…In describing this entity, Din and Meggitt treated 48 mallet fi ngers as opposed to 4 mallet thumbs over a period of four years [ 23 ]. The authors defi ned a mallet as one in which the site of injury is distal to the MCPJ of the thumb resulting in loss of only IP extension as opposed to a 'dropped' thumb in which the lesion is proximal to the MCPJ and has loss of both IP and MCP extension.…”

“…Radiological examination may or may not reveal a fracture of the distal phalanx or rarely, of the proximal phalanx [ 23 ]. The difference to note is the longer distance for potential injury; that is from the insertion site to the MCP joint of the thumb (the length of the proximal phalanx) (Fig.…”
