Malmquist Indexes of Productivity Change in Tunisian Manufacturing Industries

Abstract: This research aims to investigate the extent and nature of productivity growth in manufacturing industries using nonparametric frontier techniques. In order to decompose the total factor productivity (TFP) into technical efficiency change and technological change we use the output-oriented Malmquist productivity index method for 34 Tunisian manufacturing industries over the period 2002–2016. The results indicated that TFP has witnessed an average growth of two percent over the period 2002–2016. The productivit… Show more

“…Variations in these values are directly caused by competition and lower prices of services and products, and thus lower profitability. The established technological progress corresponds to the results obtained in research on examples of other industries such as [45,46]. DMU 2 and DMU 3 do not change significantly since the ratio of efficiency in certain time intervals is 1.…”

“…The Malmquist productivity index is widely used in the financial, industrial, medical, and other sectors to measure production efficiency [109,110] Famous economist Sten Malmquist proposed the Malmquist productivity index as a consumption index in 1953 [111,112]. Later, this methodology was applied to a productivity analysis [113].…”

“…As a result of the study, the increase trend in the Chinese food sector productivity was negative (68.75%). Zrelli et al (2020) tried to calculate the total factor productivity of the Tunisian manufacturing industry between 2002-2016. In the study, output oriented Malmquist index is used as a method.…”
