Malnutrition in Older Adults in the United States

Abstract: The scientific literature clearly establishes the relationship between good nutrition and healthy aging. Unfortunately though, a large number of older Americans are at risk for poor nutrition not only because of the aging process but because of poverty, rurality, and/or lack of access to good quality food. Poor nutrition can easily translate into malnutrition, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among older Americans. Malnutrition is not an inevitable side effect of aging, it can be prevented or at leas… Show more

“…In Australia, up to 50% of older adults (>65 years) are malnourished or at an increased risk of malnutrition [ 27 ]. A moderate-high risk of malnutrition has also been reported by other studies conducted in different countries [ 28 , 29 , 30 ]. The evidence suggests that those experiencing hip and knee pain are at an increased risk of sarcopenia (a form of malnutrition where the loss of muscle mass occurs) and falls [ 31 , 32 , 33 ].…”

“…Approximately 60% of the United States population experiences diet-related chronic disease such as overweight/obesity, heart disease, stroke, or T2D [91,92]. Approximately 56 million adults aged 65 and older currently live in the United States, and up to 60% of those individuals are estimated to experience malnutrition [93,94]. Another 10% of the United States population experiences physician-diagnosed food allergies and/or intolerances [95,96].…”

“…Malnutrition and dehydration are associated with declines in health status [12] and decreased bone health [13] resulting in increased frailty and greater fall risk [14,15], higher rates of hospitalization [16], and increased mortality risk [17][18][19][20]. Considering that between 25% and 33% of older adults age 65 years and older fall every year [21,22], the relationship between malnutrition, dehydration, and falls among older people is important to consider [15,20].…”
