Malnutrition: laboratory markers vs nutritional assessment

Abstract: Malnutrition is an independent risk factor for patient morbidity and mortality and is associated with increased healthcare-related costs. However, a major dilemma exists due to lack of a unified definition for the term. Furthermore, there are no standard methods for screening and diagnosing patients with malnutrition, leading to confusion and varying practices among physicians across the world. The role of inflammation as a risk factor for malnutrition has also been recently recognized. Historically, serum pro… Show more

“…So, further studies are needed to show the effectiveness of albumin infusion in aspects of general or malnourished geriatric patients. Although albumin is a popular serum marker as the determinant of nutritional status recently it's noted that albumin is good for detecting inflammatory process rather than undernourishment [13].…”

“…MAC can be measured at the same point as the TSF with a tape. A decline in subcutaneous fat and overall body muscle mass is a significant indicator of malnutrition and low levels of them correlate well with morbidity and mortality (15).…”

“…Body mass index (BMI) as one of anthropometric measurements is a clinically available and objective variable with a fairly wide-spread use [7]. Biochemical parameters, such as hemoglobin, total lymphocyte count (TLC), albumin and cholesterol levels, are also objective measurements reflecting nutritional status [8]. The history and self-reported questionnaires to evaluate nutrition are not applicable to VS and MCS patients.…”
