Malondialdehyde: A Possible Marker of Ageing

Abstract: Background: Numerous recent studies have suggested that oxidative damage may be important in the ageing process, and lipid peroxidation is an important biological consequence of oxidative cellular damage. Objective: The aim of this work was to analyze the activities of the two protective enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), and the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) to examine the relationship between the ageing process and defence antioxidant and lipid peroxidation. Method: SOD activity was me… Show more

“…These results agree with those obtained in the Spanish population at large (De la Torre et al 1990;Casado and López-Fernández 2003;Gil et al 2002) and in the emergency services (Casado et al 2005(Casado et al , 2006. We found higher SOD and CAT activities in nurses than in the control group, but significant differences were obtained in SOD activity only between the group of nurses and the control group for ages from 30 to 39 years.…”

“…These results agree with those obtained in the Spanish population (Gil et al 2002). As can be seen in Table 2, MDA levels increase with age in both the control group and in intensive care unit nurses.…”

“…A significant increase (P<0.001, Figure 1) in XOD activity in diabetic patients could produce a burst of free radicals. Once O 2 -radical produced then H 2 O 2 and .OH are continuously produced by Haber-Weiss reaction and /or Fenton type reaction [23]. Oxygen radicals might cause the lipid peroxidation of biomembrane through a chain reaction.…”

“…The extent of oxidative damage can be determined by measuring biochemical parameters such as glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase, malondialdehyde or total antioxidant status (19)(20)(21) . The GSH has been shown to be of importance in immune function and restoration of CD4T lymphocyte levels in HIV infection (22)(23)(24) .…”
