Malondialdehyde; Lipid peroxidation plasma biomarker correlated with hepatic fibrosis in human Schistosoma mansoni infection

Abstract: Schistosomiasis is a debilitating parasitic disease, affects large number of host species. Currently affects 250-300 million people in tropic areas. Schistosoma pathogenic impact is hepatic periportal fibrosis; the parasite-induced inflammatory cellular activation promotes oxidative stress, resulting in lipid peroxidation (LPO), with subsequent increase in inflammatory mediators as malondialdehyde (MDA). This study was set up to reveal possible contribution of lipid peroxidation byproducts MDA in hepatic patho… Show more

“…MDA is a representative product of polyunsaturated fatty acid peroxidation, which can be increased by oxidative stress. 32 Hydroxyl radical and ROS are dismutated by SOD to generate hydrogen peroxide, which can be decomposed by CAT. 33 The MDA level was significantly increased in the LPS group, while the activities of SOD and CAT were markedly decreased, indicating oxidative stress damage.…”

“…Oxidative stress favours lipid peroxidation, the levels of which can be used as a surrogate for oxidative stress levels (Sayed et al ., 2006; El-Lakkany et al ., 2011; Li et al ., 2013; Aziz et al ., 2015). Thus, we analysed lipid peroxidation levels in extracts of parasites incubated with 7-epi for 24 h. While Castro et al .…”

Thus, we analysed lipid peroxidation levels in extracts of parasites incubated with 7-epi for 24 h. While Castro et al (2015) used 1% methanol as a vehicle for 7-epi, we preferred to use Kolliphor ® EL (KEL, at 0.01%) in the present study, due to the higher solubility of 7-epi in this solvent, which has a lower impact on SOD activity and lower parasite toxicity (data not shown).…”

“…MDA is the most representative indicator of OS in the body, while SOD is representative of the body's antioxidant system, and its function is to clear ROS. Also, Aziz et al (2015) found that MDA levels significantly increased in human schistosomiasis and correlated significantly with hepatic fibrosis. This may confirm the role of LPO byproducts in schistosomiasis pathogenicity, and proposing malondialdehyde as a biomarker for schistosomiasis morbidity.…”
