MALT Lymphoma Originating in Breast and Uvula

Abstract: A case of marginal zone B cell lymphoma of MALT type arising in the uvula and breast is reported. The patient, a 30-year-old woman who delivered a child and lactated in 1997, was suffering from Sjögren syndrome (SS). She was diagnosed with MALT lymphoma after a biopsy of the right breast and uvula. To investigate the relationship of the delivery, lactation and MALT lymphoma, we examined the immunohistochemical analysis of hormone receptors. As a result, lymphoid cells of the breast were stained with anti-proge… Show more

“…5 Two cases have been reported in association with autoimmune disease: one case associated with local stromal amyloidosis in a woman with systemic lupus erythematosus 6 and another without amyloidosis in a woman with Sjögren's syndrome. 7 Schwartz and Strauschen described eight women with lobulocentric B cell type hyperplasia of the breast, referred to as "lymphocytic mastopathy", three of whom presented with autoimmune disorders, 4 but there was no evidence of a plasmacyte component associated with light chain restriction.…”

“…Otherwise, monoclonal B cells, originating in thyroid might populate breast endothelium. The case of a woman suffering from Sjögren's syndrome and MALT lymphoma of breast and uvula [23] suggests such a mechanism. In summary, we speculate, that Hashimoto's thyroiditis favored development of MALT lymphoma in our patient.…”

“…Additionally, history of autoimmune disease might play an important role in pathogenesis. Cases of Sjögren's syndrome and breast lymphoma have already been published [23,24]. As mentioned above, patients with Sjögren's syndrome and Hashimoto's thyroiditis have an increased risk of developing lymphoma [8,9,25,26].…”

“…However, a few reports in the world have presented malignant lymphoma of the uvula accompanied by lymphoma of the neck, breast or stomach [1,5,6]. Therefore, we followed up and checked for recurrence and metastasis in the whole body and oropharyngeal area by PET-CT and hematological findings.…”
