Malvinia escutiana, a new biostratigraphically important Oligocene dinoflagellate cyst from the Southern Ocean

Abstract: The Eocene-Oligocene Transition (EOT,~34 Ma) represents the culmination of Eocene cooling by the initiation of large-scale Antarctic glaciation. Recognition and correlation of the EOT in Southern Ocean sedimentary successions have been difficult as a result of the general lack of well-calibrated biostratigraphic markers. Here we describe an unusual hypnozygotic organic walled dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) that originated in the Southern Ocean in conjunction with the onset of major Antarctic glaciation as refl… Show more

“…A total of 48 samples from the G€ oynük North section and 45 samples from the Okcular section were processed following standard palynological processing techniques of the Laboratory of Palaeobotany and Palynology (Houben et al, 2011). Briefly, approximately 10 g of each sample was crushed, oven dried (60 C), weighted and a known amount (10679, Standard Deviation 5%) of Lycopodium clavatum spores were added.…”

“…Further north in the Southern Ocean, dinocyst records have been generated from ODP Site 1168 (Brinkhuis et al, 2003a) and Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 511 (Goodman and Ford Jr., 1983;Houben et al, 2011). Efforts to accurately calibrate the dinocyst events encountered in these studies to existing timescales were not only hindered by taxonomical challenges, but also by other factors such as a lack of independent age control or relatively short and/or incomplete sedimentary archives.…”

“…The age of the uppermost part of this unit was interpreted as late Eocene. Our assemblages bear also species recorded at the Site 511 on the Malvinas Plateau (Goodmanand Ford, 1983;Houben et al, 2011). All the units mentioned above have been deposited as the result of the transgressive event that occurred around the EOT.…”
