Mammals of Korea: a review of their taxonomy, distribution and conservation status

Abstract: The Korean Peninsula and its associated Pacific islands have a distinctive, yet poorly studied mammalian fauna. Korea was a land of invasions and wars for many centuries. The loss of large mammals per unit area that has occurred in Korea may have been greater than in any other country. The peninsula has a depauperate rodent community. The forests are mostly harvested, replaced by intensive agriculture. Unfortunately, the dissemination of information about the mammals of Korea and their taxonomy has been limite… Show more

“…In South Korea, the wild boar was the most frequently poached animal (for illegal gallbladder trade) until the late 1990s (Ministry of Environment, 2010). After the implementation of anti-poaching legislation and the extinction of top predators, such as tigers, leopards, and wolves, in the early and mid-1900s, wild boar populations have been rapidly increasing (National Institute of Biological Resources, 2017; Jo, Baccus & Koprowski, 2018). In addition, wild boars have expanded their range from their native forest habitats to urban areas and some islands.…”

“…Zootaxa has long been one of the few journals allowing to publish large monographs at no charge for the authors. A marking article of the Mammalia section is the monograph on the mammals of the two Koreas (Jo et al 2018;216 pp. ), a concrete example of how taxonomy can sometimes go beyond political barriers.…”

“…In North Korea, water deer are presently distributed along the west coast (figure 1) and are believed to be present in most of South Korea where, in some areas, the animals are sufficiently numerous to conflict with agricultural interests [42,43]. Water deer have been the subject of reintroduction and release efforts in China and the Koreas in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries [39,43,44]. Translocated populations in the UK and France (source populations first introduced in 1900 and 1970, respectively) now account for approximately 40% of the global population [17].…”
