Mammals of Paso Centurión, an area with relicts of Atlantic Forest in Uruguay

Abstract: Paso Centurión is one of the most diverse areas of Uruguay. It is legally protected at local and national level, however, there are different interests competing for its land use and management. With the aim to document the biodiversity of the area together with the local people, the NGO JULANA has been conducting a participatory monitoring process with camera traps since 2013. Here, we present a list of 23 medium and large-size mammal species documented in the area and a standardised dataset of occurrence rec… Show more

“…Although the real (existing in nature) or fabricated (as an artefact of the distribution of sampling efforts) species richness cannot be accurately assessed (Grattarola and Rodríguez-Tricot 2020), we can still infer and compare species richness for standardized sampling coverage (Chao et al 2020; Roswell et al 2021), because at a certain degree of sample completeness, judging the magnitude of richness differences between communities is more efficient, compared to using equal sample sizes (Hsieh et al 2020). In this case, the comparison can be performed on the maximum value of coverage reached (Cmax) by the community that reaches the lowest coverage when the number of samples is extrapolated to double (Chao et al 2020).…”

“…Within South America-one of the world's most biodiverse continents 14,16 -, Uruguay, which spans one of the world's most extensive natural grasslands 43,44 , stands-out given the convergence of tropical and non-tropical ecoregions that combined bring together the geographic boundaries of an important 'mix' of species representative of those major biological domains [45][46][47][48][49][50] . Yet, Uruguay's network of protected areas spans < 1.5% of the country's territory 51 -the lowest for any country in South America 52,53 .…”
