Mammary Analogue Secretory Carcinoma of the Palate: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Abstract: Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma (MASC) is a recently described salivary gland tumor, with a limited number of published reports. Less than three hundred cases have been reported in the literature and only 18 of these cases have been reported in minor palatal salivary glands, though publication bias is likely a factor. We present a case of a 57-year-old male who was diagnosed with MASC tumor presenting in a minor salivary gland and briefly review the current literature. MASC has a variety of histological f… Show more

“…The prognosis of SCSG is related not only to the rst operative procedure, but also to age, clinical stage, and Ki-67 proliferation index. Although six of 23 patients in this study had local recurrences (mean age 53 years) and one patient died, the overall prognosis was good, which is consistent with reported results [32]. Additionally, the prognosis is age-dependent.…”

“…Although six of the 23 patients in this study had local recurrences (mean age 53 years) and one patient died, the overall prognosis was good, which is consistent with previously reported results. 32 Additionally, children and young patients generally have better prognoses, whereas adult patients have more aggressive tumors, with older patients (more than 60 years) having the most aggressive tumors and the highest recurrence rates. This may be related to differences in pathological features at different ages and the characteristically poor immune function of older patients.…”

“…SCs occur in less than 0.3% of all salivary gland tumors. Parotid gland is involved in most cases (70%), followed by the submandibular gland (7%), and less commonly, the minor salivary glands; however, the percentage is unknown 1,2 …”

“…They are typically negative for calponin, SMA, CK5, CK6, CK14, and p63. Due to SCs being lipid‐rich tumors, adipophilin expression pattern and its intensity could be useful in distinguishing secretory carcinomas from other salivary gland tumors 1,2,7 …”
