Mammographic features of triple receptor-negative primary breast cancers in young premenopausal women

Abstract: The mammographic features of TRN breast cancer suggest more rapid carcinogenesis leading directly to invasive cancer, that may require adjunct imaging tools for early diagnosis.

“…The reason might be due to the diversity of race, menopausal status or weight in different regions. (Sachdev et al, 2010;Li et al, 2013;Somali et al, 2013) Similar to other studies (Crook et al, 1997;Noguchi et al, 1999;Claus et al, 2005;Yang et al, 2008), DCIS was rare among our TNBCs lacking mammographic calcifications. As we all know, calcifications were regarded as the specific pictures of DCIS.…”

“…TN DCIS develops rapidly in a brief period of time, making it difficult to be detected at a precancerous state. Yang et al (2008) suggested that biological differences exist among breast cancer subtypes and that TNBCs may have a distinct etiology. The results proved that TNBC was an aggressive cancer with a rapid progression to invasive cancer.…”

“…3,16 In our study, the index tumor was associated with DCIS in 83% of patients, contrary to the low incidence of associated DCIS in TNBC tumors described by others. 17 The clinical and pathologic features of the TNBCs observed in our study may reflect a slow growth rate or a less aggressive pattern of carcinogenesis, consisting of a stepwise pattern of progression from DCIS to invasive breast cancer. These Original Article data underscore the importance of screening in populations identified at risk for high prevalence of TNBC, because early detection and treatment results in an excellent prognosis.…”

“…Identifying, evaluating, and monitoring process measures in screening is a focus of the National Cancer Institute's Population-based Research Optimizing Screening through Personalized Regimens (PROSPR) initiative, in which participating centers report structured data on the processes of cancer screening, diagnosis, and management. Increasingly, scientific evidence indicates that breast cancer is not a single disease [4]; tumors with different genetic "signatures" differ in prognosis [5], and they perhaps differ in likelihood of early detection through screening [6]. By identifying and evaluating process and outcome measures across the cancer screening continuum, PROSPR aims to provide generalizable evidence for a risk-based model of breast cancer screening.…”
