“…In a group of over 400 patients with breast cancer metastasis to the thyroid gland was found in only two patients (< 1%). Similarly, Mirallié et al (2005) in a group of 29 patients with metastasis to the thyroid gland did not find any case of breast cancer metastasis [27]. After taking into account the relative frequency of metastases (in relation to the number of patients subjected to FNA with a specific cancer) we observed that the dominant type of metastases was a tumour infiltrating the thyroid by direct extension from the neighbouring primary lesion.…”

“…Our study relates to patients diagnosed for a thyroid disease in an endocrine outpatient clinic, in whom a routine ultrasound examination was performed, with subsequent biopsy of revealed lesions. Oncological patients represented only 6.3% of that population, in contrast to centres specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers that present many reports on metastases to the thyroid gland [13,[27][28]. Probably for this reason, in our study the percentage of patients with secondary cancer (0.3%) was lower than in typical oncological centres, and similar to that found in centres involved in the diagnosis of thyroid disorders [15,25] and in general centres (non-specialised) [8] (Table IV).…”

“…The thyroid gland is one of the most vascular organs in the human body, yet clinical metastases to this gland are uncommon, accounting for only 1-3% of malignant neoplasms of the thyroid [48][49][50][51]. Data derived from autopsies indicate that the thyroid is the site of metastasis in 1.25% of unselected autopsies (the thyroid gland is not routinely examined in many autopsies) and up to 24% in patients with disseminated malignancies [52].…”

“…Melanoma is one of the most notorious tumors both for metastasis at unusual locations or after a long latent period (sometimes years later when the excision of the primary is forgotten) [20][21][22]. Our two cases of metastasis from subungual melanoma (where history was elicited on probing) and uveal melanoma (where clinicians were guided to search for it) are cases in point.…”
