Management and Treatment of Patients With Major Depressive Disorder and Chronic Diseases: A Multidisciplinary Approach

Abstract: In patients with physical chronic diseases, the prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD) is approximately 2-to 3-fold higher than in the general population, and it can reach up to 20-40%. The comorbidity of MDD with chronic medical diseases is associated with poorer quality of life, increased medical symptom burden, poor adherence to self-care regimens, increased risk of functional impairment, morbidity, and mortality, and also higher medical costs. “…Prevalence of MDD in RA patients vary from 13% to 42%, two to four times higher than the prevalence in the general population [ 5 ]. Complications of depression reduce the treatment response of RA patients and increase the patients’ mortality [ 6 ]. Although the precise mechanisms underlying the high occurrence of depression in RA patients are unknown, abnormalities in gut microbiota composition may play a crucial role in link between RA and depression [ 7 ].…”

“…Among factors associated with a lowering of the H-QoL, an important role has been recognized in several chronic diseases at the co-occurrence of Major Depressive Disorders [ 25 - 29 ]. Although some research has sought to elucidate the relationship between Major Depressive Disorders, H-QoL and cancer [ 18 , 30 , 31 ], this relationship has so far been little studied.…”
