Management of Auxin-Cytokinin Interactions to Improve Micropropagation Protocol of Henequen (Agave fourcroydes Lem.)

Abstract: Henequen (Agave fourcroydes Lem.) is a high value plant species both for agricultural and ecological uses. The species is very well known worldwide by the quality of its fiber that is widely used for industrial purposes. This species is propagated at a large scale by asexual methods but current propagation technologies are not satisfying the grower's demands. A. fourcroydes has been cultivated in vitro but it has shown some recalcitrant behaviour during the multiplication and rooting stages. The combination of… Show more

“…Although further studies are desirable, for example, to discover the levels of endogenous hormones in this species, it appears that F. chiloensis produces sufficient endogenous auxin levels to induce rooting, and that the incorporation of additional amounts lessens this process, as previously documented for sweet potato [5] and henequen [23]. …”

“…In those protocols, Murashige and Skoog medium has been supplemented with combinations of cytokinins and auxins such as 2,4D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), IBA (Indole Butyric Acid), BA (6-benzyl adenine), BAP (6-benzyl aminopurine), NAA (Naphthalene acetic acid), IAA (Indole-3-acetic acid), TDZ (Thidiazuron), Kinetin and Topolin. Among these, 2,4D-BA or 2,4D-IBA are the most commonly utilized [ 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 ].…”
