Management of Leucinodes Orbonalis Guenee on Eggplants During the Rainy Season in India

Abstract: Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee (Pyraustidae: Lepidoptera) is a fruit and shoot borer which is the key pest of eggplant (also known as brinjal and aubergine). L. orbonalis causes broad-based problems in eggplant cultivation. An effort was made to control the borer during the Indian rainy season, as this is the time when the problem is at its worst. The impact of treatments on natural enemies as well as pollinators was also assessed. Integration of phytosanitation, mechanical control and prophylactic application of… Show more

“…Brinjal is prone to attack of many insect pests throughout its life cycle in the field. Brinjal shoot and fruit borer is the key pest in almost all brinjal producing countries particularly in Bangladesh, where the hot and humid climatic conditions favor the reproduction and incidence of this notorious pest (Chakraborty and Sarkar, 2011;Srinivasan, 2009). The neonate larvae bore into tender shoots at the vegetative stage and flowers and fruits at the reproductive stage of plants, causing a yield loss of up to 85 to 90 percent (Misra, 2008;Yousafi et al, 2015).…”

“…Different researcher developed the different module of pest L. orbonalis management. Chakraborty and Sarkar (2011) found that integration of phytosanitation, mechanical control and prophylactic application of Neem Seed Kernel Extract (NSKE) exerted a satisfactory impact on the incidence and damage of L. orbonalis. Sanitation and destruction of alternate host reduces the pest damage to fruit if such practice is coupled with other community wide means to reduce immigration of pest adults into the area (Alam et al, 2003).…”

“…Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is a monophagous and most destructive pest of brinjal (Latif et al, 2010;Chakraborti, & Sarkar, 2011;Saimandir, & Gopal, 2012;Kariyanna et al, 2019), an essential annual vegetable in South and South-East Asia (Thapa, 2010). Recent reports displaying the production of brinjal cultivation in 2018 revealed that 1.87 million ha were cultivated in the world for a total output of 51.28 million tonnes, of which 62% and 24% of the world production were covered by China and India respectively (FAO, 2016).…”
