The article addresses the problems of disseminating environmental information among the population in order to encourage reasonable consumption. The research methodology includes general scientific (analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization) and special legal methods (technical and legal, interpretation of legal norms). The research materials comprise scientific articles, official reports, law enforcement practice, as well as regulatory legal acts related to the current research. The legal definition of ‘environmental information’ is analysed. Different approaches to understanding ‘the environment’ are considered. Legal gaps related to ‘environmental information’ are identified. Key environmental problems, which have to be communicated to the population in order to encourage reasonable consumption, are considered. The authors reach the conclusion that successful resolution to problems related to environmental pollution with plastic and other types of waste depends on the quality of legislative regulation, regular interaction between authorities and private companies, as well as the completeness and timeliness of d environmental information delivery to citizens.
