Management of orofacial lesions with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy and photobiomodulation protocols in patients with COVID-19: A multicenter case series

Abstract: Several oral lesions related to COVID-19 have been described in the scientific literature. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighs importance of supportive protocols, which can reduce the inflammation and aid in tissue repair in severe cases. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) alone or in combination with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) can be used to manage orofacial lesions in confirmed cases of COVID-19. Here, we sought to describe the clinical presentation and specificities of three cases in which aPDT an… Show more

“…Antiviral PDI is not yet an established method in the clinical setting and, as by now, is mostly limited to topical applications. Recent reports suggest, however, that antiviral PDI has been successfully used in the clinical setting, e.g., for oral decontamination [45] and treatment of orofacial manifestations [46] in patients suffering from COVID-19. In these reports, clinically approved agents, like methylene blue or curcumin, are used as photosensitizers, although their properties are far from optimal.…”

“…Since photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) and APDT can be used to inactivate the virus, reduce inflammation, reduce pain, and repair tissue in these lesions associated with COVID-19 [170] , Sachet et al. [171] investigated the therapeutic results of PBMT/APDT methods. Since these lesions are caused by SARS-CoV-2, it is better to initiate APDT during the first 1–2 d of treatment.…”
