Management of prelabor rupture of membranes at term

Abstract: If a woman wants a short labor, she will benefit from early induction. We did not find statistical differences in the rate of obstetric intervention or in the maternal morbidity, but there was a tendency towards adverse effects of late induction.

“…This was comparable to the results of our study. It is also similar to the observation of Sperling et al where 40 % went in to spontaneous labour within 12 hours thus the use of oxytocin can be avoided in a good number of patients by delaying induction of labour without compromising maternal and neonatal condition (10) . Per vaginal examination was done for both the groups at the time of admission.…”

“…A type I error of 10% and type II error of 20% together with a power of 80% and a level of significance of 0.05 were used as basic assumptions. Based on a previous study, 68% of patients with PROM went into spontaneous labor within 24 h (15). We therefore assumed a 30% increase in this number is significant.…”

“…Assuming that 68% in the conservative group would be in active labour within 24 hours of the prelabour rupture of membranes 17 , our sample size of 30 patients in each group was based on finding a 30% increase in this number in the actively managed misoprostol group (power 80%, α= 0.05, β= 0.2). Statistical analysis included relative risks with 95% confidence intervals for discrete data and mean difference with 95% of the confidence intervals of the mean difference for continuous data, using GraphPad Instat Version 3.01 (GraphPad Software, San Diego, California, USA) and SPSS for Windows Version 10.0 (SPSS, Chicago, USA).…”
