“…Instability of the thumb MCP joint, either primary or secondary, is a frequent problem observed in primary thumb CMC OA. The collapse of the thumb, which is often accompanied with significant adduction contracture, leads to a compensatory hyperextension of the MCP joint (Bridgforth and Ross, 2022). In most cases, resection arthroplasty of the thumb CMC joint cannot compensate for the collapse and thus does not substantially add to stabilizing the first MCP joint.…”

“…The main problem of this instability is the loss of force in pinching. Revision surgery for the stabilization of this joint includes soft tissue procedures, such as capsulodesis (Bridgforth and Ross, 2022; Degeorge et al., 2021; Rayan and Do, 2013), sesamoid fixation (Deml et al., 2015; Zouzias et al., 2011) or MCP joint fusion (Bridgforth and Ross, 2022; Degeorge et al., 2021). Although there is no evidence to support one method over another, joint fusion seems to provide the most predictable results, especially for cases of severe instability and for those with osteoarthritic changes of this joint (Degeorge et al., 2021).…”
