Management of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste in the Context of a Sustainable and Circular Model: Analysis of Trends in Latin America and the Caribbean

Abstract: The main objective of this research is to analyze the most relevant aspects of the management of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and the Sustainable and Circular Production Models (SCPMs) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The bibliometric method was used for the analysis of 190 studies obtained from the Scopus and Latin America and The Caribbean on Health Sciences (LILACS) databases. The systematic review provided information on the main research approaches: identification and cha… Show more

“…In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) countries, there is a growing interest in the research, promotion and implementation of various waste management alternatives, such as sorted waste collection, recycling and WtE approaches. Research and policy initiatives on sustainable and circular production models (SCPMs) prioritize bioenergy and biofuels as leading possibilities for the valorization of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) such as FW ( Ulloa-Murillo et al, 2022 ). One of the major priorities in LAC was reflected in the circular economy (CE) and bioeconomy as the primary drivers of waste recovery and/or valorization.…”

“…Garcia-Peña et al (2011) studied the practicality of hydrogen (H 2 ) generation under batch circumstances using fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) supplied from local markets in the Mexican context and discovered that H 2 production from FVW is a novel and feasible energy technology. Research has noted that these countries have made progress in implementing public policies for integrated MSW management based on SCPMs (Duque-Acevedo et al, 2020a;Duque-Acevedo et al, 2020b;Ulloa-Murillo et al, 2022) enhanced the conversion of waste into valuable goods (organic amendments, animal feed, bioenergy and biofuels), contributing to the establishment of new markets (Schröder et al, 2020;Ulloa-Murillo et al, 2022). In Mexico, a study by Garca-Pea et al (2011) focused on the feasibility of using FVW from a food distribution market as a substrate for AD and discovered that pH control and nitrogen addition improved AD performance and co-digestion with meat residues allowed for better results (Garca-Pea et al, 2011).…”

“…The final sample included 81 studies for Spain and 9 for the Czech Republic. Then, from the CSV files with the metadata of the last samples obtained from Scopus, a scientometric analysis was carried out, one of the most widely used methods to evaluate the structure and evolution of scientific production ( de Sousa, 2021 ; Murillo et al, 2021 ; Ulloa-Murillo et al, 2022 ). Using VOSviewer, version 1.6.16, specialized software for scientific mapping ( Wang et al, 2021 ; Wong, 2018 ), keyword co-occurrence network with an overlay visualization was constructed.…”

“…Review studies on WM in developing countries’ context considered different levels such as regions, continents, nations, cities and communities to individuals. For instance, some studies covered WM in Asian developing countries (Ali and Sion, 2014; Dhokhikah and Trihadiningrum, 2012), in South Africa (Godfrey and Oelofse, 2017), in Latin America and the Caribbean (Ulloa-Murillo et al, 2022) and cities in developing countries (Guerrero et al, 2013; Wilson et al, 2013). Other studies have focused in their reviews on the assessment methods (i.e.…”
