Management, risk factors and outcome of cranial dural arteriovenous fistulae: a single-center experience

Abstract: In general, intracranial DAVFs can be successfully surgically managed by simple venous disconnection in many cases. However, half of the patients do not show complete remission of symptoms. Age and the occurrence of perioperative complication were the most important determinants of outcome.

“…One cohort was separated into two separate publications with fewer than 50 patients each, but we included both publications in the light of the total sample size . This left 34 cohorts meeting our mandatory inclusion criteria (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ijs.12337/suppinfo), though none met all of our predefined ideal study characteristics (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ijs.12337/suppinfo) .…”

“…22 While the disease course for some DAVFs may be benign or non-progressive, depending on patterns of venous drainage, location of the fistula, and amount of shunting, other DAVFs may become aggressive, resulting in morbidity or even mortality. 5,11,21,29…”

“…Only a few cases have been published in the past 15 years; therefore, the pathogenesis, presentation, clinical course, and treatment remain unclear. 4,[8][9][10][11][12] The purpose of this single-institution retrospective cohort study was to compare the clinical characteristics, angioarchitecture, and treatment outcomes of patients with progressive (enlarging fistulas or developing de novo fistulas) versus nonprogressive (recurrent original fistula or the presence of multiple unchanging fistulas) intracranial DAVFs.…”
