Paper aims: This paper aims at answering the research question "How to successfully build up and strategically manage a new network of applied R&D in Brazil?" Originality: The paper is based on a unique experience of a strategic partnership, transferring the experiences of managing the largest network of applied research in Europe to the Brazilian National Innovation System (NIS). Research method:The research described in this paper follows an action research approach, using a participative process of rapid prototyping, pilot tests and continuous revision and adaptation. Main findings:The paper presents a comprehensive and consistent set of management models, procedures and tools for the planning, implementation and evaluation of applied R&D institutes.Implications for theory and practice: The paper's findings contribute to the empirical research on methodologies to manage knowledge-based networks and innovation actors at the interface between research and industry.

Research in the challenging field of industrial engineering and engineering management often needs the expertise from more than one discipline. Various disciplinary competences have to be combined to answer research questions and to solve specific (engineering) problems at the interfaces of different professional disciplines. The disciplines being part of the research and problem solving process have to be consequently integrated to form an efficiently performing interdisciplinary consortium.Current research states that this interdisciplinary integration process has to include various dimensions. This paper introduces three sets of interdisciplinary integration methods. Together they cover all of the dimensions explained before and lead to an enhanced interdisciplinary integration. Having just implemented a set of integration methods, measurement methods are adjusted to evaluate and optimize them continually. Zusammenfassung: Netzwerke sind soziale infrastrukturen. Dieses Verständnis des schillernden begriffs "Netzwerk" ist der ausgangspunkt des artikels. es bietet eine klare abgrenzung zu verwandten begriffen der "Kooperation" und "Organisation". es bietet auch ein klareres Verständnis der Beratung von Netzwerken. Die Autoren identifizieren Ansatzpunkte zur Beratung von Netzwerken dabei sowohl auf ebene der Netzwerkknoten (Organisationen, individuen), konkreter Kooperationen im Netzwerk als auch in der gestaltung von Kommunikation und Lernen im gesamtnetzwerk.Abstract: A network is a social infrastructure. This definition of the quite ambiguous term "network" is the starting point of this paper. it offers a clear distinction of "networks" from related concepts of "cooperation" and "organisation". Furthermore it offers a clearer understanding of network consultancy. the authors suggest points of intervention on the level of network nodes (individuals, organisations), of cooperations within the network and in the design of communication and learning in the network.
