Liberalization and the ever larger share of variable renewable energies (VRES), e.g. photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy, affect security of supply (SoS). We develop a system dynamics model to analyse the impact of VRES on the investment decision process and to understand how SoS is affected. We focus on the Swiss electricity market, which is currently undergoing a liberalization process, and simultaneously faces the encouragement of VRES and a nuclear phase out. Our results show that nuclear production is replaced mainly by PV and imports; the country becomes a net importer. This evolution points to a problem of capacity adequacy. The resulting price rise, together with the subsidies needed to support VRES, lead to a rise in tariffs. In the presence of a high share of hydro, the de-rated margin may give a misleading picture of the capacity adequacy. We thus propose a new metric, the

Xiluodu arch dam of Xiluodu hydro-junction standing on Jinshajiang River is one of international super-hydropower-projects. Furthermore, this super arch dam lies in peculiarly complicated geographical location where the most dangerous geologies of Southern-western China live. So, the dam foundation condition must meet rigorous requirements on geological stability, mechanical-physical characters and permeability etc. Thereby, the key scientific objects include attitude of foundation surfaces, geological defects of main strata, blasting-excavation-substitution systematic construction for soft geo-layers. Based on practical survey on strata’s lithologic characters and geological structural traits from bank slopes as well as valley bed, researched comprehensively were the dam foundation weathering and unloading condition, the distribution of intra- and inter-formational disturbed belts, compressive belts and parental fissures. Particularly, discussed attentively was their quality assessment. The analyses results showed that the globally initial quality of dam foundation was super one and the local geological defects can be reinforced reliably by substitutive excavation in addition to intense consolidation grouting so as to meet constructive requirements of Xiluodu arch dam. The conclusion is the sophisticated process for blasting construction and comprehensively constructive management system is applicable. The blasting excavation produced smooth and completely split surfaces. The exposed strata’s blasting damage was controlled effectively. The geo-strata’s treatment met generally constructive safety requirements.

The Swiss government, through its Energy Strategy 2050, is engaged on a path to transition Switzerland to become a carbon-neutral country by the year 2050. In this chapter, we look at the impact that the electorate can have on this transition and on the Swiss electricity market. This is done using hybrid agent-based modelling. We model the Swiss electricity market and we add to this a model of the policy-making process. This allows us to study which policy instruments are more likely to be implemented depending on the Swiss electricity market progression and on the policy actors’ interests. The results have shown that the electorate has a limited impact on the policy chosen and on the electricity market. Overall, an environmentally conscious electorate leads policy actors to select the carbon tax as a policy more often. This, however, has the adverse effect to increase the electricity price and increase import dependency in winter. In high demand growth scenarios, the carbon tax policy is not sufficient to stem the construction of gas turbine power plants. We also show that because the electricity model does not consider an extended demand response option or technology advancement, the knowledge gained from this model is limited. This drives the behaviour of the model into scenarios which are unlikely to happen, such as a large increase of the gas turbine power plants. Overall, we conclude that, in their current form, even with an environmentally conscious electorate, the electricity market conditions do not allow Switzerland to reach its emissions targets.
