Managing Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Face of Pandemic Using Internet-Based Parent-Mediated Interventions: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract: ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is primarily treated with psychosocial intervention. However, it is costly and requires extensive resources to be effective. This inaccessibility is also further worsened by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, making the shift to a digital approach a sensible option. Among the available ASD therapies, parent-mediated interventions (PMIs) have a broad application and lower implementation cost. Hence, this systematic review aims to evaluate the potential that telehealth-based… Show more

“…Additionally, aspects such as the effectiveness of intervention programs, such as the implementation of communication systems [21,69], reading habits and behavior management [70,71] or training programs to support people with ASD or training parents on specific learning strategies such as the studies of [20,22,27,72] have also been frequent in this field. Thus, it is recommended to pay attention and deepen its study in order to develop evidence-based practices [52].…”

“…On the other hand, some interventions, have been adapted solely for asynchronous self-directed internet-based instruction (eLearning), while others use a hybrid telehealth approach, combining telehealth-delivered caregiver coaching with self-directed eLearning and/or in-person elements. eLearning approaches that include an element of real-time remote contact with trainers has been advocated for, given that opportunities for coaching, feedback and support are associated with better outcomes ( 31 , 32 ). Asynchronous telehealth interventions may include adjunctive peer-to-peer support via virtual support groups, chatrooms, discussion groups, bulletin boards or forums ( 33 , 34 ) and these options should also be investigated in the context of telehealth research.…”
