Analysing energy consumption efficiency is essential for understanding energy resource consumption patterns, identifying the economic consequences, and developing effective public policies. The study investigates energy consumption efficiency levels in Portuguese municipalities in order to analyse disparities in energy consumption efficiency. The aim is to observe the possible relationship between population density and the energy consumed by residents. The study uses the DEA model to detect benchmarking patterns, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement in energy consumption practices. The results suggest that there are serious disparities in energy consumption efficiency between Portuguese municipalities and a significant positive correlation between population density and the amount of energy consumed. The disparities can be attributed to the different levels of adoption of efficient energy consumption practices. The results point to the need to define public policies aimed at promoting more efficient energy consumption practices. The research emphasises the importance of implementing more effective public policies that encourage the adoption of sustainable energy consumption practices by residents. The conclusions have important practical implications for the formulation of public policies aimed at local energy efficiency and the development of sustainable energy consumption.

The transition to low‐carbon energy and energy independence of a country play an important role in the sustainable development of its energy sector. Another important issue of sustainable energy development is the cost competitiveness in the generation process; with new renewable energy technologies, a sustainable energy transition to carbon‐neutral society is possible. In this article, we present a view of sustainable energy transformation based on a case study of Malta. We have created a simulation of a Maltese electricity system with projected growth and dominance of photovoltaic energy in the electricity market. The study results suggest that a system with a high penetration of photovoltaics has significant advantage over a conventional system using fossil fuels. In particular, in the simulated Maltese system, the total annual cost of energy was reduced threefold, the CO2 emissions were reduced by 40%, and the energy independence of Malta increased by 60%. In the end, the article gives a recommendation for further research into the Maltese energy system.

This study provides empirical evidence that CO₂ emissions from transport (total and by transport types) have an impact on countries’ logistics efficiency, both in general (Logistics Performance Index) and in terms of its individual indicators (volumes of freight transport (total and by transport types) and total investments in transport infrastructure). The aim is to empirically demonstrate the impact of CO₂ emissions from different modes of transport on the logistics efficiency of countries, specifically using data from 60 International Transport Forum (ITF) member countries. The Granger causality analysis, based on VAR modeling for six periods evaluated by the World Bank (2007, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018), demonstrates that in 50% of the countries, changes in CO₂ emissions from transport are the cause of the shifts in the Logistics Performance Index (increasing emissions can impede logistics efficiency). The sample was reduced to these countries for the regression modeling. Regression modeling (with fixed and random effects, Hausman test, for 2002–2021 on panel data for countries in which direct causality was confirmed) showed that a one-unit increase in total CO2 emissions from transport (in general and in air transport) is associated with 0.12 and 0.21 decrease in total investments in transport infrastructure. An increase in road CO2 emissions is associated with a 0.49 decrease in road freight transport (ton-km per thousand units of GDP). An increase in CO2 rail emissions is associated with a 0.15 increase in total investments in transport infrastructure and a 0.12 increase in total freight transport.
